MIDAS Ireland (Microelectronic Industry Design Association) is a joint industry and academic organisation which defines and develops the future direction of Integrated Circuit design in Ireland. MIDAS as an organisation was launched in February 2001 by the Minister of Enterprise, Trade & Employment Mary Harney TD. It is a national cluster consisting of the microelectronics design companies and third level institutions in Ireland, building on the already-strong relationships between them. In 2010 the membership consists of 7 industry members, 18 associated members (High Potential Startup Companies) and 17 academic members representing all the courses in Ireland that produce electronic engineering graduates.
MIDAS SUB-COMMITTEES
MIDAS has four Sub-Committees which focus on the following areas:
- Research
- Third Level + Schools
- Training
- Indigenous Start-Ups
The Sub-Committees have set the following as their main goals for 2010:
RESEARCH
- Promote industry/academic collaboration in Embedded DSP, Mixed Signal, RF.
- Assist in attracting a leading Mixed Signal/RF academic to Ireland
- Award a MIDAS Innovation Prize for best published paper by a PhD student
- Award a MIDAS Innovation Prize for best published paper by a Masters student
- Review the operation of the Technology Transfer process from research groups to industry
THIRD LEVEL and SCHOOLS COMMITTEE
- Promoting Electronic Engineering as a career | see electronic.ie
- Promoting www.electronic.ie website a central resource for students interested in electronics
- Seeking support from industry and government bodies for our activities
- Promoting schools outreach activities to assist with the teaching of physics and electronics at 2nd level
- Seeking government support for additional resources in schools for maths, science and ICT
- Promoting cross-college collaboration within a national EE academic and industry forum
- National Elec Engineering Table Quiz
- Proposing a national robotics competition for first year college students
TRAINING
- Fund the development of a new training course relevant to the IC design community
- Co-ordinate training courses for the MIDAS members
- Attract expert speakers to Ireland (in association with Research Sub-Committee)
- Keep MIDAS members informed of training opportunities + activities.
INDIGENOUS START-UPS
- Promote the establishment of an EDA Tools Resource Centre
- Increase awareness of indigenous IC design industry in state agencies and wider industry
- Review support for microelectronics industry by Government Agencies
